How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Session Without Disrupting Bedtime Routines

Updated: Jul 9

Getting ready for a family photo session is both exciting and a little stressful for parents. We all want those perfect snaps that capture joy, love, and togetherness. However, in pursuit of perfection, parents often unintentionally disrupt bedtime routines, leading to cranky kids and disappointment in the overall energy of the session. Let me tell you been there done that and nothing is more deflating than pouring so much love and effort into getting everything organized and planned for eveyone to be cranky and leave feeling like you wish you never even did a family photoshoot. Let’s explore how to prepare for your photo session while keeping nap time intact and ensuring everyone enjoys the day including dad.

The Myth of the Pre-Session Routine Change

Many parents think they need to alter their children’s nap times or daily schedules for great photos. However, shifting these routines can actually backfire. Kids thrive on consistency. Keeping their normal schedule can lead to happier, more vibrant photos, as I discovered with my kids, who are 5, 3, and 1.

We stuck to our regular routine before our photo session. The result? My kids were lively and cheerful, not cranky or overtired. Those late-night family events show similar results: kids often have more fun when routines go undisturbed, and it shows in their smiles.

Avoiding the Over-Planning Trap

As parents, wanting the perfect shot captures our desire to control every detail. This often creates unnecessary stress, which can make kids (and dads) more irritable. Too much planning can feel confining, leading children to pick up on your stress.

Instead, embrace spontaneity! If you approach the day joyfully and relaxed, your kids will likely mirror those feelings. This is also a big deal for dads too. If littles see or hear dad talking negativly about getting photos done our little minis are more inclined to feel like they too can object to not wanting to be in the moment and enjoys the night. Studies show that kids are more likely to smile in relaxed settings. So, try and let go of the urge to control different aspects and focus on enjoying the moment.

Set the Stage for Adventure

Preparation can be exciting instead of rigid! On the day of your session, talk to your kids about the fun “adventure” they’re going on, rather than stressing about the photographer.

For example, if you're headed to a nearby flower farm, mention the vibrant colors and sweet smells they might encounter. Use fun language that stimulates their imagination. You might say, “We’re going to a flower farm! Who do you think will find the biggest worm?” This shifts their focus from nerves about posing to excitement about exploring.

Keep the Energy Flowing

To set a positive tone, include playful activities before heading to the photo spot. Engage your kids in games or family activities, emphasizing that the photo session is just another fun family adventure together.

You could play a quick round of tag or take turns telling silly stories in the car. Let your kids know that the session involves silly poses and laughter. This approach will encourage genuine, candid shots that showcase your family’s special bond. Since my style is heavily revolved around those candid moments we will definently be playing lots of games and doing silly dance moves.

Avoid Mentioning the Photographer

While it might feel natural to discuss the upcoming photoshoot, how you frame that conversation matters. Instead of emphasizing the photographer, focus on what the kids will experience.

By focusing on the fun aspects rather than the nature of a photoshoot, you can reduce any anxiety your kids might have about meeting someone new. If the experience feels like an adventure with their mom, dad, and siblings instead of a task, your children will approach it with much more excitment and ease.

In the Moment

Once you arrive at the photo location, let your children roam freely. Allowing them space to explore gives you a chance to capture those genuinely delightful moments—whether it's a burst of laughter, a shared secret, or a spontaneous game of tag.

Even if your kids wander off or skip poses, go with the flow! Many of the best family moments arise unexpectedly. Those candid, unposed shots often tell the most heartwarming stories.

Simple Steps for Stress-Free Photos

Preparing for your family photo session doesn't require rigorous planning or schedule changes. Maintain your children's routines and create a fun atmosphere. This will lead to happier and more engaged kids during the shoot.

Embrace spontaneity, focus on playful interactions, and remember that the goal is to capture your family's authentic love. With these simple preparations, you can ensure a joyful experience filled with beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.

Every family is unique, and every photo session should reflect that individuality. Enjoy the process!

Of coarse these are a few of the observations I have learned over the years between working with other families and experienceing it all first hand with my own littles. At the end of the day you know your babies the best and some of these suggestions might be helpful but for others and certain personalities it might not be as good of a match and thats okay! As long as at the end of the session you and your family had fun and we made some new memories and endulged in some sweet bonding moments thats all that I hope and wish for for my clients.

Much Love,

Meg
